Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.  2 Timothy 2:3
Onward Christian Soldiers is a 19th-century hymn written by Sabine Baring-Gould. The words express the Christian’s call to service for a spiritual battle of which Jesus Christ is the all-powerful Commander in Chief leading the way with His cross.

Onward Christian Soldier, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus, going on before…

Faithful followers of Jesus Christ should not be ignorant of the fact that their spiritual orders are rigorous. Our objective is to be well trained in the disciplines of our Christian walk to be used by Him.
Directives:
1. Repent ye therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19
It is impossible to place your faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior without first changing your mind about who He is and what He has done. Whether it is repentance from willful rejection or repentance from ignorance or disinterest, it is a change of mind. Biblical repentance, in relation to salvation, is changing your mind from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ. A person who has truly repented from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ will give evidence of a changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 5:19-23; James 2:14-26). (What is repentance and is it Necessary for Salvation? )

2. Conform your life to Christ. Be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what that good is, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2   It is important to know and understand the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16) if you are to follow after Him.

3. Avoid stumbling blocks and discouragements. When most of the Israelites revolted and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, Joshua maintained his integrity and declared: And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15

4. Trust God in all things. There are times when we seem to be walking in a cloud not knowing or seeing what lies ahead. But who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. Isaiah 50:10

5. Stay on course. It is a daily task of discipline to surrender wholly to the One who carries the cross before you. Just as a runner who is preparing for a long distance race, or Paul, his spiritual race – But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Corinthians 9:27.

  • Take up your cross (Matthew 16:24)
  • pray always (Luke 21:36)
  • watch (Matthew 26:41)
  • and put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:13; 2 Corinthians 6:7)
